Daymare: 1994 my favorite game at Steam Next Fest.
When Steam Next Fest comes out, I get really excited. It may sound nerdy, and well I'm a nerd, but I love to sample all the new indie demos. There is just something magical about indie games. Some of them amaze me.
In walks Daymare: 1994 I was combing my twitter feed looking for indie titles to experience. When the Dev team or at least I think its a team not sure on that one yet. It would be hard to believe that there isn't a team behind this game however, the indie team behind this game posted some video on twitter of the game. So, I wrote the name of the game down and put it on a list of games to play.
Right away from the game play that demo offered, I fell in love with the protagonist. She struck me as very tough and an ass kicker. The story to action pace was great. You spent a lot of time progressing through the actual game and finding clues throughout the landscape. Much like the Resident evil style many pieces of logs or writings however, they weren't long and drawn out you got a good sense of the story without having to read a 2-page essay.
One of the things that jumped out at me about this game was the creatures that are attacking you. I really can't call them zombies I could, but I don't believe that would be accurate. One of the best aspects of this game is the enemies. So, when you kill one enemy when its body falls on the ground its electricity goes up in the air and if there is another enemy around, they absorb that energy. If they turn red, they are immune to bullets. So, you use this freeze you have attached to your back that you shoot from your wrist to freeze the advancing baddies in place and proceed to blow them apart with your shotgun, smg, and or you can melee them. This provides a unique situation once you are rushed by a group cause the spray takes time to freeze them while the others are rushing to attack you, and if you don't blow the enemy apart, they will unthaw and proceed to chase you. So, you have to plan your attacks well.
The demo gave off a old school Resident Evil feel but with this gen graphics. Stage has sprinkled physical puzzles throughout it that you have to solve to get to areas that you need to progress. This makes the game challenging, but not too much.
Audio was great from the screams or howls from the enemies. To the warping noise and electricity crackling through the air when it leaves your enemies body. The in-game music did a good job of setting the atmosphere.
Daymare: 1994 goes to the top of my list for the amazing indie games that was a part of the steam next fest this February. I definitely wish list it but don't rush dev's I think you have winner on your hand with this one. I found out this is actually the second installment to this game the first one was Daymare: 1998 I plan on picking up and doing a play through.
